Course Overview
Overview
Gain the skills and knowledge you need to work in an education support role or a special education-focused support role in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education, where you will provide assistance and support to teachers and students. Graduates with this qualification are able to work in schools alongside classroom teachers, and many graduates also continue with into studies at university in a teaching degree such as primary or secondary education while working in an Education Support role.

Duration
Blended learning (on-campus and online), full-time: 12 months. | Traineeship: 12-24 months.
Requirements
- Students should allow for an additional 20 hours of study per week, outside of scheduled class times for completing directed learning activities.
- This course contains some physical components in moving around the classroom, general lifting, kneeling on floor i.e. performing CPR (First Aid), moving tables and chairs, carrying equipment, manual handling tasks, pushing wheelchairs. Students may be asked to get a medical clearance from their GP if there is an underlying medical condition or disability.
- All students are required to complete a practical placement totalling 100 hours.
- A Working With Children's Check (Victoria and New South Wales) will be required to undertake your placement for this course. Please note there may be a cost associated with these checks.

- Placement uniform shirts and badges will be provided by Wodonga TAFE. Placement services may also have expectations around workwear requirements.
- Students are required to have access to transport for placement.
Assessment
The assessments will include the validation of underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes required to meet the course outcomes. A range of assessment strategies to meet different learner needs will be selected. Assessment strategies may include:

Skills Developed
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of an Education Support worker including legislative requirements.
- Understand of relevant learning frameworks in an education environment
- Support teachers to implement school curriculum as needed
- Use positive support techniques to support the behaviour of children and/or young people.
- Establish safe learning environments to facilitate the learning process.
- Adapt education resources to meet the needs of students with learning difficulties in consultation with teaching staff.
- Assist in the implementation of Individual Learning Plans (ILP) and behaviour management plans (BMP)
- Recognise and support the needs of diverse learners
- Reflect on own professional practice as an Education Support worker
- Implement work practices which support the protection of children and young people.
- Assist in the delivery of literacy programs
- Participate in workplace health and safety
- Gain practical skills through a 100-hour work placement in an education environment
- Support students' mathematics learning
- Provide support to students with autism spectrum disorder.

There are many course pathways open to graduates, which may include higher level studies in general Community Services or Education and Care. Graduates may also continue their studies to university in an education-related degree such as Teaching or Education, with relevant skills and experience working within a classroom environment with their Education Support qualification.
