Course Overview
Overview
This course is undertaken as part of a cabinet making apprenticeship. Students are employed in a range of fields in the furnishing industry, in areas such as furniture makers, kitchen manufacturers, shop fitters, joiners, reproduction furniture makers, furniture restorers and boat interior fitters. This course is designed to give you the skills you need to operate as a trades-person in cabinet making. You will also gain experience in using hand and power tools and develop the skills involved in reading and using plans to build projects. The base skills that you acquire can also be used to build your own kitchen or cabinets.
You must be employed under an Australian Apprenticeship Agreement to undertake this course.

Wodonga TAFE provides hearing and eye protection, but participants in this course must wear steel-capped boots and work-suitable protective clothing. You're encouraged to bring your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Assessment
The assessments will enable students to demonstrate the underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes required to meet the course outcomes. A range of assessment strategies to meet different student's needs will be selected, including theoretical and practical assessments, such as assessing outcomes of furniture you produce, portfolio, projects and observation in a simulated environment.
Other Information
In undertaking this course you will be learning at TAFE for ten three-day blocks for a total of 300 hrs per year, and complete up to 80 hours of training on the job.

Learning Outcomes
Skills Developed
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of skills at trade-level for those working in furniture making and those involved in the manufacture and installation of fitted furniture typically in a kitchen, bathroom and related context. Installation skills may be applied to new or renovation work. The work is in a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader related activities involving known routines, methods and procedures, where some discretion and judgement is required in the selection of equipment, services or contingency measures and within known time constraints.
