Certificate III in Hospitality

Overview

Get qualified in hospitality! This qualification is available via direct entry, and also as a traineeship.

This course is available to you if you are a new entrant to industry, have an interest in obtaining a pathway into a hospitality career, or have existing experience within the broader hospitality industry.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in hospitality organisations such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and espresso bars. You will develop a broad and diverse range of skills while learning from industry-current teachers who are passionate about this ever-evolving and exciting industry.

For Trainees - as a trainee this qualification provides you with the opportunity to study as you work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and espresso bars.

Duration

Full Time: on-campus, 6 months.

Traineeship: employer-based, 12-24 months (depending on agreement with employer)

Requirements

It is expected that you will meet industry and health requirements with your apparel and equipment. You will be required to purchase industry standard equipment and a uniform, to be worn only on restaurant days or service periods, which consists of - Black long-sleeved collared shirt – buttoned up front. Long black pants. Black enclosed lace-up shoes.

Restaurant service periods and/or work placement is a requirement of this course to achieve the qualifications.

You will be required to stand for long periods of time and will be required to handle heavy items eg three plates with food, undertake a broad range of duties eg wash dishes and clean.

You will be required to complete the unit SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety prior to commencing food and beverage service. This unit is delivered as part of the training for the qualification.

It is recommended that you have your own laptop or have access to a computer and internet for at-home and online learning studies. Access to computer devices is available on campus, where required.

Field Placement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 36 service periods (shifts) in SITHIND008 - Work effectively in hospitality service.

You are able to achieve the completion of the 36 service periods over the duration of the qualification and will require attendance at all timetabled restaurant service periods - restaurant days will vary outside of standard timetables days.

It is highly recommended that you undertake placement in a commercial industry based hospitality environment. You are able to complete the service periods by mixing the timetabled on-campus service periods with work placement.

Support will be provided through the Practical Placement Coordinator to obtain suitable work placement.

For Trainees - You are able to achieve the completion of the 36 service periods with a combination of your work-based service periods and on-campus service periods.

Assessment

The assessments will enable students to demonstrate the underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes required to meet the course outcomes. A range of assessment strategies to meet different students' needs will be selected, including observation, questioning, case studies, practical demonstrations, and quizzes in a variety of settings including Wodonga TAFE's Valleys Restaurant, online and by your employer in the workplace.

Skills Developed

A successful student will gain a range of well-developed hospitality service, sales and operational skills and a sound knowledge of Industry operations. You will gain and further enhance your skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, technology and self-management skills and also learn essential business skills.

Certification

By successfully completing this course you will receive a nationally recognised AQF Qualification.

Pathways

The Hospitality and events industry is diverse in nature, and this qualification allows for multi-skilling and specialisation in a variety of different sectors. After successful completion of the Certificate III in Hospitality students have the option to continue onto further study.
